Hi,

I have a numbering scheme set up that works perfectly but now I need to
occasionally put a " or a [ in front of some of the paragraphs to denote
quotations or temporary paragraphs.

so it would look like this.....

1. heading

1.1 numbered para

"1.2 Quote

1.3 numbered para

[1.4 temporary para

You cannot do that with a numbering scheme. You are have to going to depart
from using the numbering scheme for those paragraphs and create the
numbering for them in the same way as you did for your post to the
newsgroups.

Two rather ugly solutions for you:

Use a borderless text box in the margin.

or

Use the ADVANCE field to shift the text into the margin. For example
your paragraph 1.2 might read:

1.2 { ADVANCE \L 30 }"{ ADVANCE \R 25 }Quote

Where the contents of the {} brackets are fields are inserted by
pressing ctrl-F9. This has the effect of moving left 30 points before
your character is displayed and then moving right again by 25 points.

The advantages are that you can apply formatting to the paragraph,
including the character in the margin, and also you can save the
field as an autotext entry for easy repetition. The disadvantage is
that you will have to judge by eye the values to use in the fields in
order to make things line up properly, and these will of course change
depending on formatting.

As I said, rather ugly.
