Include bullets and numbers in TOC

Brenda

I'm working in a long legal document and need to include
automatic numbering and bullets that appear in the body in
the Table of Contents.

The body of my doc is autonumbering via customized outline
system. My TOC is compiled of marked text.

Any suggestions on how to get the numbering from the body
to appear in the TOC without having the TOC renumber the
items?

Hi Brenda

I don't believe it's possible to use TC fields to mark entries for a Table
of Contents and bring the paragraph numbering of the paragraph to the Table
of Contents. This is because the text within the TC field itself is used to
build the TOC, and since that text doesn't have numbering, no numbering
appears in the TOC.

I think you've got three options here.

1. You can add numbering to the TOC styles themselves. The advantage is that
this is quick to do. The disadvantage is that the TOC will be numbered, but
the numbering is not derived from the body of the text. So the numbering in
the TOC will only reflect the numbering in the body of the document if you
don't accidentally leave out an entry, or include an extra one.

2. Create a Table of Contents using outline levels. If your document has
used outline levels, then Insert > Reference > Index and Tables. By default,
Word will insert a ToC that derives from outline levels, but you can check
to be sure. On the Table of Contents tab, click Options and tick the
"Outline levels" box.

3. Use numbered styles for your document, preferably the built-in heading
styles, since they are used by default in a table of contents.

Hope this helps.
