Includetext question

I am setting up a group of related spec documents that will be used on
various projects. Each project requires that the footer in each spec document
be the same, but the footer content and format vary from project to project.
What I have done so far is to create a footer.docx that resides in the
project folder with all the other specs. The format for the footer is
maintained in this file and brought into the other documents via a field
consisting of the following {INCLUDETEXT "footer.docx" \* MERGEFORMAT}. The
problem I have is maintaining the format from the footer document once it is
inserted in each spec document. When the individual spec document is opened
the inserted footer text is not formatted as it was in the footer document.

Am I missing something or is what I am trying to do just not possible?

Make sure to format the source document (footer.docx) with a style that
doesn't exist in the target documents; then the formatting will be
preserved. Also, you should set the based-on style to "(no style)"; that
way, you prevent the style from inheriting settings from (say) the Normal
style of the target documents.

Thanks for the quick response!
I am not sure what you mean by your second sentence to set the based on
style to "(no style)". Do you mean to create a style in my target document
called "no style"?

The first panel you come to when you create or Modify a style includes
a line at the end of the list at the top for "Style based on". This is
often set to Normal, so that when you change, say, the base font of
your text, all the related styles get the new font, too. That's what
you should set to "(no style)".
