Including Appendix number in caption

R

Rouke

Hi,

I have a document with chapters (1 to 6) and appendices (1 to 8). Each
can have tables and/or figures. In the chapters I include the chapter
number in the captions of the figures and tables, but in the appendices
these captions include either eg. chapter number 7 for Appendix 1
(continue from chapter numbering), or include no chapter number at al,
eg. the first figure in Appendix 2 has caption label: "Figure 8".

How can I correctly include the appendix numbers in the captions of the
tables and figures in appendices?

Regards,

Hi,

Thanks for that link, the results look good!

However, when fine-tuning the styles; Why is it that when I edit a TOC
style that the Heading styles get screwed up?

eg. I had all my heading numbers aligned along the left margin (4.0 cm)
and after editing the TOC style for Appendices (Heading 7), Headings 1,
2, 3 were all aligned and indented at 4.44 cm. When I changed all these
back to the margin and made some changes in the TOC style, the heading
styles were all aligned with the page border (0 cm). How are they linked
to each other. I have deselected automatically update for each style,
and styles are based on the normal style, but I didn't change the normal
style.

Any help would be appreciated.

TOC styles will reflect any *direct* formatting in headings, so you want to
avoid that except when it's deliberate (italicizing a title, for example),
putting all formatting in the heading style. Changing the TOC styles should
not affect the headings at all, however, *unless* you're applying numbering
to the TOC style and are doing this through Format | Bullets and Numbering
instead of Format | Style and are selecting the numbering style that's
applied to the headings. For more on this, see

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks again, my thesis is starting to look better each time and I'm
sure I'll get to a supurb looking document eventually. There's one thing
that I haven't figured out, and I'm sure you can help me again.

Some chapter and appendix headings are longer than the width of the line
and are therefore wrapped to the next line. However, when the second
line is long enough, eg. 14 characters, it is followed by leading ....'s
and a right aligned page number (as I want it), but when the second line
is shorter, eg. none to five characters, it is followed by a tab mark
and a left aligned page number. I have tried modifying the tabs in the
TOC styles, cleared all except the right aligned one, but when I update
the TOC, there are still some tabs in the line (visible on the ruler). I
have also manually added tabs in the TOC, but then the page number is
not preceded by leading ....'s.

Any further help on how to modify TOC styles would be much appreciated.

Suzanne,

To be more precise, the style for Chapter level 1 is in Heading 1, and
the style for Appendix level 1 is in Heading 7 (after Shauna Kelly).
There is a tab mark in TOC 7 at 3 cm, but not eg. in TOC 1 (where I
don't have a problem, but that could be coincidentially). I checked for
a tab at 3 cm in style TOC 7 and in Heading 7, but there aren't any, the
only thing is a text indent at 4.3 cm in the Heading 7 style. In the
table of figures, the captions wrap correctly with leading ...'s and a
right aligned page no, while there is no right aligned tab in the style
for table of figures at all!

Make sure that the TOC style has a hanging indent at the same position as
the first tab stop. You may also want to give the TOC style a right indent
well to the left of the right tab so that long headings will wrap short of
the end of the line, something like this:

Appendix A. This is the very long title of the first
appendix in the thesis................................221
