Including Attachments in Outgoing Email

B

Buzzard

Whenever I try to add an attachment to an outgoing email by clicking on the
paperclip icon, Outlook 2007 shuts down. I'm using HTML format - not RTF. I
use McAfee security, and even when I turn it off, the problem still exists.

If I go to My Documents in MS Explorer and right click and copy the file I
want to attach, I can go back to my outgoing email, make sure the cursor is
in the email text box, and do CTL+V, and the file icon will appear in the
appropriate place below the subject line. Then I can send the email and the
recipients can open the attachment.

I'd appreciate any advice you smart folks out there can offer.

Diane,

It happens a few seconds after I click on the paper clip, but before I
choose the document to attach.

So just the paperclip menu is causing the crash? Does it crash when you
click the icon or after you select the attachment?

I'd start with Office diagnostics. Maybe delete outcmd.dat file too.

Thanks, Diane.

I ran the Office diagnostics. It found no errors, but said that it could
not finish because it could not find a file that I had elected not to
download. I have no idea what file this might be. I went to privacy options
and checked the box which will allow Microsoft to download files I may need,
so that may help eventually.

I also searched my C drive for a file named outcmd.dat, and none was found.

One additional bit if information: When I click the icon for attaching an
Item vs a File, Outlook does not shut down. The same is true for including
other items such as business cards, calendars and signatures. So the problem
is limited to attaching files alone.

Thanks again for your support as we work through this problem.

Diane,

Still no "magic" solution from Microsoft.

Do you have any more ideas?

This isn't a forum to obtain free Microsoft support. It's just a community
of other users (i.e., everyone here is your peer). No MVP is an employee of
Microsoft. It's a title that a non-Microsoft employee (i.e., user) gets to
recognize their longevity and helpfulness in the microsoft.* newsgroups.

[Note: All quoted posts were stripped because you put your sigdash line at
the top of your post. Trimming of replies means removing the signature.
There is only a start-of-signature delimiter. There is no end-of-signature
delimiter. So everything after the sigdash line ("-- \n") is your
signature, not quoted posts in the body of your reply. Yeah, the webnews
gateway provided by Microsoft sucks just as bad as their OE newsreader.]

Have you yet tried loading Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe")
which does NOT load any enabled add-ons that you installed for Outlook?
Since you are trying to attach a file, an add-on that pre-processes the
file, like an add-on to automatically compress attachments over some
threshold size, could be erroring and taking Outlook with it.
