incoming Japanese email displaying incorrectly

hello.
we are running Exchange 2000 server at our office...Outlook 2003 on the
desktop. I have received some Japanese emails that "look" as if they are
encoded wrong (i.e. if I copy the text to a web translator, I get no
recognizable translations) - also a friend in Japan who I've forwarded these
messages to, says they are unreadable except for the subject line.
Is this an encoding problem? I receive other Japanese email from web sites
like hmv.co.jp without any problem. Is there anything I can do to re-encode
these messages? I have tried all the other Japanese viewing encoders (Auto
Select, which the messages come in as; Shift-JIS, EUC) but it's still
unreadable.
A quick response would be appreciated.

This issue is usually occuring if the sender uses Mac or another program
which has special fonts to send emails with. Try asking the sender what font
they are using and installing that font.

Hope it helps, late but still tryin :p

the sender is a japanese mailing list so they don't respond! but thanks for

Can I ask which list, if its not a private type thing?
I have around 30 mailing lists which come in so I might have the same one,
or I can try and talk to someone in Japan who might have it.
