Inconsistency between folder list and message list

E

Ed Kimball

I have had a recurring inconsistency with the number of unread messages
shown in the folder list (on the left) and the message list for this
newsgroup (in the top right). For example, the folder list shows three
unread messages, but the message list says there are none. Similar
inconsistencies happen almost every day on this newsgroup.

They do not happen on the other news servers to which I subscribe (ATT
Worldnet News and the University of Phoenix Online).

If I select mark all message unread, the folder list shows no more unread
message. But if I don't, I'm wondering, of course, which number is correct
(in today's case, three or zero).

Has anyone else had this experience? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

The most likely possibility is that you are merely seeing the silly "ghost
numbers" that the Microsoft Public News Server almost always has. It's just
an estimate, and it almost always gets it wrong. Other news servers don't
have this problem.

First, try command-L when you get to the news group, to see if the new
messages are "hiding" on the server."

Thanks, Mickey. I looked at the link. Cmd-L makes no difference. I guess I
just have to live with the annoyance - or stop following this newsgroup.

Of course, one does wonder, if MS is such a great software company, why does
their news server have this problem when no one else's does????

It's not the server, it's the software. Entourage is a terrible newsreader.
Just ignore the 'unread' number.

Another option to getting help with Entourage is to subscribe to the
Entourage talk list. The numbering works on email messages. :)

How to subscribe to the Microsoft Entourage talk list:

Uh, is Entourage any less MS than the server software? ;-)
Can't they make their products work together?
