inconsistent error linking Paradox tables all versions of access

I'm using Access 2000 (same thing happens with 95 and
2003) to open paradox db tables. While 2 colleagues are
able to link using standard method (new access db, link
tables) I am unable to do so on any, getting the
message "External table not in the expected format".

NB, I've tried this on 3 machines with no success - 2
colleagues were on 2 different machines.

I've seen other posts in other newsgroups talking about
this, but no answers. Has anyone here experienced and
worked around it (or even fixed it)? I'd be grateful even
for an informed starting point.
