Inconsistent SDI behaviour...

Edgar Hammer

When I double-click a .DOC file in Explorer, on one
computer a single instance of Word immediately opens to
show my selected document. On another computer, Word
first opens a blank document then a second instance of
Word opens to show my selected document. Why the
different behaviour? I understand the SDI interface. The
question is why is Word first opening a blank instance
before opening the selected document on one computer and
not the other?

Hi Edgar,

The commands associated with the file extension in Windows
are probably different. On each machine, open the windows
Explorer, then Tools/Folder options/File types. Look for
*.doc in the list, then click "Advanced". Choose "Open"
from the list in the following dialog box, then click Edit.
compare the information in the "Application used to perform
action" and the "DDE message" boxes.

(Note: I'm using Windows XP, so the menu names might differ
slightly.)
