My inbox shows 3 unread messages. When I choose to view Unread, the window is empty. Sometimes the 3 goes away, then comes back again.

Ctrl-/right-click the inbox, then select Repair Message List from the
contextual menu. See if that solves the problem.

I tried this but there is no option to Repair Message List. I also checked to see if there are updates to the product.

What kind of account is this -- POP, IMAP, Exchange, or newsgroup?

If it's IMAP, then Michel's suggestion should work; command-option-L should
also work.

If it's Exchange, try selecting Empty Cache from the contextual menu.

If it's a newsgroup, you can just choose Mark All Read. Entourage has
occasional problems keeping the Read messages synchronized and sometimes
counts very old messages as unread even though you have read them.

I've never seen this happen on a POP account.

Good luck.
