Incorrect new mail notification icon behaviorl.

N

Noah Peters

In Outlook 2003 a new message icon appears in the system tray when new mail
arrives. If a user goes directly to outlook and reads the message the new
message icon does not clear. If you right click on a message and choose
"mark as unread" the icon will clear.

Sounds normal to me. What I suspect is that you're not reading the message
by opening it, but using the Reading Pane and you have not set your Reading
Pane options to mark the message read in the reading pane. So, even though
you are reading the message, you haven't "opened" it per se, so the new
message icon does not get cleared. Then, when you right-click and "Mark as
Unread", you are actually opening the message (to update the message
attributes). This opening of the message invokes the code that removes the
icon. That code is not very intelligent and all it knows is that you've
opened a message, so assumes the icon should be removed. It doesn't care
what you've actually done with the message. You could also open a message
you read last week and the icon will be removed. Outlook doesn't care what
message got opened.

By the way, how is this message a suggestion? You should not use the
suggestion feature to post a problem.

My suggestion is that the behavior should be changed. I do not describe this
as a problem. That was your assumption. I simply explained a behavior that
I beleive is not quite intuitive. Because of the fact that it is not
intuitive, it should be changed. If I have read every message in my Inbox,
but the notification icon remains, then I receive a new message, exactly what
good is the notification icon that has been in my tray since before the new
message arrived.

No where did you say "I suggest". You just describe what you thought you
saw.

And still i do not say "I suggest". "I simply explained a behavior that
I beleive is not quite intuitive." What exactly are you arguing? Is this
not a forum to "suggest" improvements to MS Outlook? Can you make these
improvements? If so, then please comment on the technical feasability
suggestion. If not, then you should comment on the merits of my
suggestion--i.e. will this make MS Outlook a better product or will this
detract from the product's quality.

And you didn't state that in the original post either.

Outlook?

Sure, but you did not appear to have made any suggestion. You didn't say,
"I think this behavior is misleading and should be changed," or anything to
indicate you were making a suggestion. It appear you simply described a
problem and needed an explanation for it
Can you make these improvements?

You didn't describe any improvements to make and I gave you the reason why I
believe the behavior you describe is correct.

Another fabulous post from Brian arguing instead of being understanding.

Which part did you not understand was a suggestion request?

he said "If you right click on a message and choose
"mark as unread" the icon will clear. "

This definitly need to be looked at. I approve his suggestion.

Brian I suggest you should STFU.

I haven't seen one answer, let alone one ACCURATE answer from you. After
you've posted a while and have established your credentials, then you can
have an opinion about the accuracy of someone else's post.
