Increase size of paragraph button in PPT

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

In PowerPoint, I cannot increase the size of the text inside a text box with the "Increase size of paragraph" buttons under the alignment and spacing portion of formatting palette. I tried to highlight all of the text and manipulate it like that but nothing happens to the text. When I open up this same file in Office 04 I can increase/decrease the size of the text with no problem. This file is saved as a .ppt. I also tried creating a new PPT and it does the same thing.
