incremental numbering for invoices

Hello

I am trying to write a macro for Word 2000 that can create invoices from
standard form input.

All has been pretty straightforward except for the issue of incrementally
numbering the invoices. I just cannot see how to do the following:

a) increment the last used number by +1, and
b) store this new number for use next time. This number is only to be saved
after the invoice has been generated successfully, of course.

Can anybody point me in the direction of some info that could help me?
