indentations on first line of every page

M

Matt Mancini

The first line of every page of my nanuscript in indented a half-inch. There
is a "paragraph" sign at the upper left hand corner of every page and you
can't delete it. This has just started today, out of the blue, after years of use.
I am using Word on Mac Office and Panther OS. This is a very important ms.,
and I would appreciate any help.

Hi Matt,

I'm not sure what's going on but it's possible the document has become
corrupt. The procedure to "uncorrupt" a document is as follows:

Carefully select all but the very last paragraph mark and paste into a blank
new document. Do a Save As and give the document a different file name. Be
sure to save a copy of the original document first in case any data is lost.

Any help?

Sounds to me as though you have inadvertently entered the Header of that
document.

Word documents always have a space for a running header, but the header does
not actually exist until you put the insertion point into it. At that
instant, Word creates the running header as a single blank paragraph and
adds it to the document file. Since the headers and footers are part of the
document structure, once created you cannot delete them without collapsing
the document.

So from the time it is created, the header will always be visible if you
turn paragraph marks on, but it will not print.

Cheers
