indents & numbers

I've got a long document [38 pages] and use numbered
indents thru-out. However, I need them to be at different
levels of indentation...even tho' I restart numbering,
everytime I increase/decrease the indent in one place,
the numbered lists in other parts of the document shift
to match. I've tried everything, including creating new
style names [which don't stick]...I'm frustrated beyond
belief [I usually use page layout programs but need
Word's table abilities...]
