It's not such an easy thing. It's been a long time since I've done i
but you can embed EPS objects into word using a Postscript style. I
you're not familar with those terms and the structure of the InDesig
document I suggest you ask your friend to prepare a Word document wit
the appropriate elements embedded and save it as a template

I'm assuming he thought you were going to have them printed. Even so he
should provide you with a PDF, since native files are going to have font
issues, etc.
I work mostly in InDesign, so for those clients who need a Word version,
I reconstruct (as close as possible) it into Word. Maybe your friend can
isolate the text areas as eps files then you can place them where they
correspond in the Word doc.

You could also export the InDesign document to a PDF, then use Acrobat
to change that into a TIF image, which can then be place in behind the
text of a Word document (or perhaps a couple of images if it's a
letterhead with a header and footer).
