Index entry dialog freezes

If I start typing into the "main entry" or "subentry" field of the Mark Index
Entry dialog box, the characters don't appear and the cursor disappears, both
in the dialog box and the Word application. Effectively the application
'freezes' and has to be stopped using the Task Manager.

This happens even with a simple trial file. It didn't happen on December 19,
2008 but happens consistently as from December 22, 2008.

Is this a known problem and is there any sort of workaround? I have tried
standard 'recipes' such as deleting the contents of the temporary files
folder and the Normal templates, without effect.
