each image.

Prior to doing your Publish to the Web to produce your web files, go to
Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck the options to "rely on vml..." and
the "allow png...". Then compress your graphics:

Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages (2003):
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA011266301033.aspx

Reference: Compress Pictures dialog box (2007):
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA100363901033.aspx?pid=CL100605171033

These steps should eliminate many of the copies and result in better
quality.

It is normal that you get multiple copies of some images. Publisher
effectively produces two sets of html code. One for IE and one for all other
browsers. In doing so, it also will sometimes make multiple copies of an
inserted image...one for IE and one for other browsers. This is normal and
by design.

You didn't say that you compressed the images as I suggested. Do that and
that will also reduce the times where Publisher will produce multiple copies
of an image, but not eliminate it. It also will improve the quality of the
images produced for your web. If you still have quality issues then post a
link to your web page and perhaps we will see other issues that are
affecting the quality of your images, but don't obsess about the number of
copies of the images produced.

If you still have a copy of Publisher 2000 floating around, you might get
better results using it for website creation only. You can install it in a
separate directory from your Office 2003 applications, and it will work just
fine. The HTML code it produces is much simpler and cleaner than any of the
other Publisher versions...or so I've understood from the discussion group
gurus.
