Index having Heading number instead of page numbers possible ?

Hello,
I would like to ask, I created a songbook. Each Song name is "Header 2" with
automatic numbering.

I have now index of songs including various songs beginnings, behind the
chapter name there are always several index hidden entries containing the
possible beginning of the given song.

You can the search in the index. But what is confusing many years for
people, that index refers to PAGE number, not SONG number, i.e. "Heading 2"
automatic number.

Is there a way or a switch that I can use ? My colleague teste it is
possible to open the document in OpenOffice and it has the possibility to do
so. However, when I put the .doc bak in the Word, it looses the ability.

I use "{INDEX \e " " \h "A" \C "1" \c 2}" index field. The rest of the
codes are not properly documented from Microsoft, for example how to use
field "\s" no examples if this would help me.

It is neither possible to google any hint since google does not allow to
search the { \ and such characters.

Any hint very welcome

thanks

Hi Peter,
very interesting and thank you for your reply
however I tried what you suggested with one song exactly with spaces and
also without space between "styleref 2" and it does not work quite

It shows { instead of the page number in the refreshed index

perhaps I should also somehow edit the main index field??

:)
please note I have fully functional and working index entries

the only thing I do with one and single song (chapter) I modify single test
index entry by manually editing it - adding
\t { styleref 2 \s }
into the existing {} behind my songe name

after modifying - it does not work - I refresh index and instead of page
numbers I see { and I would expect to see Heading2 number. Then I delete
the addition and after refresh of index I have again fully working index
showing page numbers as I use for many years

based on that I assume I must use fields :) and they seem to behave liek
fields

what I am not sure about are the suggested spaces

oh my god
after typing a response I finaly realized what you mean

it is nested field in another field

I followed your hint and used CTRL+F9 now, thanks for the hint.
Anyway now index does not show {, but shows nothing after chapter name and tab

I also tried to remove the \s bu the same result
I also tried to capitalize the STYLEREF (edit manually)

despite the fact that I have seen and used many programming languages, this
area of references is a real magic for me :)

at least I have now a piece of text to google for

Peter, Suzanne
thank you very much, finally after making the same attempt again and again
and again Word somehow decided to be a good guy and does exactly what I need.

Strange it showed blank space when toggled - for a long time it really
resisted to work.

The document however is 410 pages (really big songbook) so I learned a lot
of patience namely when it comes to fields and updates thereof every time I
make print for example, it is page numbering hell with many trick how to make
him number pages index and contents correctly.

Even copy and paste works so I will come through billions of songs quickly
and next time we play songs at the pub noone will be confused..... uhm unless
half of people has older editions of my songbook with page numbered index and
the other half will look into the new version, the confusion will temporarily
culminate :)

it will be a lot of fun

thank you again and have a nice day

P.S. actually, what does \s mean here ?

I imagine you know that XE fields are formatted as Hidden text. When they
are displayed, the pagination of the document can be very different from
when they're not. If your index is not showing page numbers anyway, this is
not an issue, but in general it's best to make sure that Hidden text is not
displayed when you generate or update the index.

Bert_Bert,
the \s switch refers to the heading number (without copying
the text of the heading).
