Hi everyone,

I'm using the automatic index faxility in word, but it only has 9
levels. I'd need more. Can I increase it (at least to 13 or 14)?

thanks

Sorry, AFAIK 9 levels is the max supported in Word for outlining, bulleting,
numbered lists, indices, etc.

Hi Impy,

To follow up CyberTaz--

In many circumstances, people who ask for more than 9 levels have
misunderstood the purpose of levels, and think that they need a level for
each chapter, instead of realizing that the level applies to subsectioning
chapters--e.g., in hierarchical numbering like 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.3.1, 9
levels would equate to :
3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1
Most people don't break their writing down that minutely.

I'm having a hard time imagining how an *index* would need 9 levels of
hierarchy--in fact, I'm kinda curious to know. Actually, while I haven't
done many indexes, I can't see how the heading levels apply to indexes at
all, as hierarchy in indexes is created differently, I thought. Did you
mean a table of contents, or have I totally missed something?

However, someone did figure out how to get 18 levels for numbered headings.
Perhaps their work will help you get whatever it is you need:

You may need to re-wrap the long link.

Good info Daiya - My first thought was that this post was looking for
something akin to one I had come across in the PC Word ng where someone
wanted to do multiple sublevels in an index.

Word supports an unlimited number of "Index" levels. The more colons you
add in your Index term, the more levels you get.

So I think you may be talking about "Table of Contents" levels.

If you are, then I would seriously re-think the book design. No reader can
possibly use a Table of Contents that contains nine levels.

Let's assume you have a Library, containing Volumes, Books, Parts, and
Chapters. If you then have nine levels within a Chapter you have 14 levels.
However, you wouldn't put all of these in one Table of Contents: it is
completely incomprehensible: no user could possibly find anything in it.

What I would do is create a system of multiple TOCs. In the Library
document (the "About this documentation suite" book...) you create a
three-level TOC that goes down only to the Book level.

In each Volume, you create a three-level TOC that goes down to the Chapter
level.

In each Book, you create a four-level TOC that goes down to the Heading 2
level.

You can if you wish create a Global TOC that goes down all 14 levels and
make this available as a searchable online resource. People can't use it as
a printed TOC, but they could search it online if you hyperlinked it.

If you need to know how to do all this, study the Word help on Tables of
Contents, then get back to me with your specific questions.

Cheers
