Index Nightmare

I've always had this problem....for years....with indexes in Word. I'm using
version 2000. Perhaps this has been simplified in 2007. I hope so! I have
no problem marking my entries and getting my index set up with correct page
numbers. But what I find so frustrating is my index is at least a couple
different fonts and sizes, and some entries are bold and some are not. I
also asked for tab leaders but they disappear everytime I update with F9.
Can anyone figure any of this??? I will frame the solution at my desk from
anyone who can once and for all resolve this! Connie

The problem could be that you format your text with direct formatting instead
of using "clean" styles. An entry in the index will inherit direct formatting
(i.e. locally applied bold, italic, changes to font or font size, etc.) you
apply to the text you mark as an index entry.

See the following article, especially the section "A Word About Tagging":
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm

Your tab leader problem: how do you add the tab leaders? If you want to
change the appearance of the index, you need to _modify_ the Index _styles_.
Applying direct formatting (e.g. tab changes) to an already generated index
will be gone when you update the index field.

Thank you, Lene. I have printed the marked the websites you have suggested
and will read them as soon as I get a chance. I am extremely busy this week
and hope to get back to this problem maybe next week. Thank you so much for
responding. If I have any more problems with this, I will reply to this
thread. Connie
