Access 97, back end database.

I keep getting an error telling me that the index is not valid. (Sorry
can't provide the exact message). When I open the back end database, there
are no tables listed. WHen I try to compact and repair, error message. I've
tried using jetcomp and that won't work either. Help...I need to recover
these tables. ALso, what causes this to happen so I can let the users know
what NOT to do.

Thanks,

Linda

Have you tried creating a new Access .mdb file and importing tables from the
back-end?

Have you tried opening a copy of the back-end and unchecking both System and
Hidden checkboxes in the Tools|Options window?

Do you have a backup copy?

No tables show on the BE? Sadness. Sounds like major corruption and a recent
backup may be the only solution. Below are some good resources for corruption
issues.

Aside from corruption, it's possible that you are looking at the wrong mdb
file for the BE or someone deleted all the tables in the BE. I would password
protect the BE in the future, assuming it's not secured now, and give the
password to very few people. However as you are getting the error message, I
bet that the problem was caused by corruption.

Also what size is the mdb file after the compact and repair? If under 100kb,
there's nothing to recover as that about the size of a new, blank A03
database file. If significantly above 100kb, there still might be data in
there.

Tony Toews has an excellent web page on database corruption.

Allen Brown also has excellent info on corruption.

I have a white paper in a Word document named Fix Corrupt Access Database
towards the bottom this page:

If the following is your message then see the excellent work Dirk did

You can also try importing into a new MDB.
