index styles and hyperlinking

is there a way to set up the built-in index styles the
same way as the heading styles so that index entries will
act as hyperlinks just like the heading entries i use in
my toc?

seems an index entry hyperlinking to a location is more
useful that a toc heading doing the same thing...
