Index using paragraph numbers rather than page numbers

I am trying to create an index for a bibliography where
each item in the bibliography is numbered (using the
automatic numbering feature). I now want to create an
index of authors but rather than refer to the page number
the entry occurs on I want to refer to the paragraph
number. Everything I have read seems to indicate that the
only reference for an index is the page number. Is there
some way that I can automatically capture the paragraph
number rather than the page number in my index.

No, I'm afraid not.

Hi CJ,

there is a solution to your problem, but only, if you use SEQ fields for
your paragraph numbering. See the following example:

{ SEQ MyNumbering } Text Text Text John Smith { XE "John Smith" \t { SEQ
MyNumbering \c } } Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text Text...

{ SEQ MyNumbering } = the paragraph number (= SEQ field)

John Smith = name of the author to be listed in the index

{ XE "Author" ..... } = the index entry (= XE field)

The \t switch within the XE field effects that the subsequent text
appears in the index (not the page number).

The SEQ field (with switch \c) within the XE field doubles the paragraph
number.

If in the view options the field codes are disabled, but hidden text is
visible, you should see something like this:

38 Text Text Text Text John Smith { XE "John Smith \t 38 } Text Text
Text Text Text ....

Your index will show:

John Smith 38

I hope this helps
