Index using paragraphs numbers not page numbers

I want to create an index in MS Word 2000 that indexes to (numbered)
paragraphs rather that page numbers. I have tried using the Chapter Heading
feature but this changes the page numbering for the document.

Hi Linda,

Word's built-in index feature doesn't support that. You could build a macro
that collects the XE fields and paragraph numbers and builds an index (as
hard text) from that, but it would need a bit of VBA expertise and some
time.

If the index is planned for a printed book, you might contact the typesetter
if s/he can do it.
