Index

Thanks to CyberTaz on 9/14 I can now insert the index in the right place,
but when I do I get a ready-made one: it does reference the document but in a
random and useless way. 'Help' says to delete an Index put the cursor to the
left of the Index and press Shift+F9 but the cursor won't go there. How can
I purge the document of this embedded index and its XE references in the
text, and start afresh??

You delete the index itself by selecting the Index field and deleting it.
You delete the index entries as follows:

1. Display Hidden text (Ctrl+Shift+8) so you can see the XE fields.

2. Use Find and Replace (Ctrl+H) to search for ^19 XE and replace with
nothing. When Word finds this search text (^19 is its code for an opening
field brace), it will select the whole field, so replacing it with nothing
will delete the XE field. Replace All.

Many thanks, but where and what is the 'Index field' that I need to delete to
get rid of the index itself?

I see all the XE fields in the text and have easily deleted many of them,
and I have also done the Find and Replace procedure that you suggest, but
when I try to 'insert Index' to start a new one a ready-made one still pops
up.

The default Index field looks like { INDEX \c "2" \z "1033" }. You'll see
it if you press Alt+F9 to display field codes. If you have deleted all the
XE (index entry) fields, then your INDEX field will display "Error! No index
entries found."
