Indexing Failure In Word 2000

Recently, when generating an index, the document is auto marked ok; but when I ask it to generate the index, nothing happens. I use a simple 2 column "N" row concordance table, column 1 and two are the same, nothing fancy. As a test when I ask for an index in a non-marked document I don't get the error message telling me it is not marked. I have re-booted, re-loded the document.
