Indexing ingredients

Hi there,
I have 30 pages of ingredients that I need to index and cross reference with
product what is the most efficient and effective way of doing this without
having to create an index entry and cross reference for EACH ingredient
especially if there are some ingredients that are the same in several
products.

Also, once I have completed the indexing and I go to edit the final index I
have a concern because I've created the index as I am going along and made a
few changes in the index but when I went to update the index it put
everything back the way it was making my changes obsolete. How can this be
resolved?

Appreciate any help and or advice on this.

Word will ask you whether you want it to index every occurrence of a
word in your document. Tell it yes.

'what kind of changes are you making in the index? If you're, say,
changing the spelling of an entry, you'll have to do that in each
index-marker that points to that entry.

Or, if you're absolutely certain that it's exactly what you want and
the page numbers will never change so you never need to regenerate the
index, then "freeze" the fields; or, more drastically, disconnect it
from all the hyperlinks -- this one is irreversible. (They're among
the F9 commands for working with fields.)
