Indexing on File OPEN or SAVE

We have a form that contains a field in which we would like to
"automatically" enter a unique number each time it is used (opened and
saved).

Is there a way that teh particular field can be indexed (increased) by
+1 each time the file is opened?

Or, is there a way to create a template and have that same field
increased by +1 on SAVE?
