indexing problem

Using Word 2002: I am making a surname – given name index, using small
hanging indent to enter the given name-[like a telephone book]. Problem:
If the given name is an initial instead of a name, word will change what I
type as follows: I enter: Surname = Copp, given = H.N.; Word makes it read
‘Copp, G. N’. Then I have to make another entry before I can correct it.
Question: how to stop Word from changing my entries ? Appreciate the help
from this group - TIA

I'm not clear what your problem actually is but if you are finding H.
changed to G. it sounds like an AutoCorrect which you can undo with Ctrl+Z
but, better, remove by going to Tools > AutoCorrect, finding it in the list
and deleting it. if I have misunderstood, please try and state more clearly
what is happening.

Thanks, Tony - -I think that you understand me - [ H does get changed to G -
the change is always to the preceding letter in the alphabet] Ctrl+Z works
fine - I understand the AutoCorrect suggestion too, and that does sound
better, so I'll work on that,too..
