indicating vacation/training of individual resources

I have assigned "work resources" as individuals and would like to insert
vacations, training and sick-days into their schedules and so far it appears
this is something that the MSP creators had no clue about... you really don't
want I think of these people...
When I enter a "Tools/schedule working change/nonworking time" change it
shows it on the little calendar in the "change working time" dialog window...
but the dang thang doesn't show up in the flippin "resource usage"
calendar!!! what's with that?!!!
So how do you identify nonworking times on the "resource usage"? And can it
be annotated...!

billb116,
My goodness, we have a "dang flippin" alert!!! All hands on deck - well,
at least everybody who isn't out partying.

Exactly what kind of business are you in that your work resources can
actually "schedule" sick days? You're right, neither the MSP creators
nor I have any clue on how to do that.

Now that we've got the important stuff out of the way, let me answer
your question. If you are expecting to see grey cells in the timescaled
data for each non-working day of each resource, you are outta luck. The
non-working time displayed in any time based display in Project is the
project calendar non-working days only. Although it might be a handy
feature to show individual resource or task non-working days, it is not
a feature that Project has. However, you will see an absence of hours in
the cells on the Resource Usage view for resource's non-working days.

Project 2007 did add the ability to separately color cell background,
BUT that only applies to the sheet data (i.e. the row and column data on
the left side of the view), not to the cells of the timescale data in
either Usage view.

Each resource may have its own calendar as follows:

Tools/Change Working Time....
In the bottom of the window click New....
Give the calendar a name such as "Joe" for Joe's work calendar. Yo may
select a base calendar to start to make your life easier... I usually use
Standard.

Change the work days for Joe to schedule his off days and vacation days. If
he happens to have the "Intentional Flu" one day, you can schedule that as an
off day when that actually happens.
Save the calendar by clicking OK.

You now have a new calendar named Joe that can be assigned to anyone or any
task as needed.

Click View/Resource Sheet.
Set the resource "Joe" to a new base calendar .... select "Joe" from the
Base Calendar drop down.

Click View/Gantt Chart
create any tasks and durations desired. Assign "Joe" as needed. Notice the
duration of the tasks may change depending on the task type.

Click View/Resource Usage View. You will see that "Joe" is not scheduled to
work on any of his off days as defined by the Joe calendar.

Does that help?

Hi,

Your request is a frequent one.
So frequent indeed that I wrote an article about it on my website:
http://users.online.be/prom-ade/
click "Microsoft Project: An abstract"

It depicts the solution (also standard if you use timesheets in Project
Server) that is to NOT use individual resource calendars but represent
absences or periods of non-availability as "Must Start On" constrained
tasks. You will then need Resource Leveling to position the "real work"
tasks vis à vis the absences.

Hope this helps,

Jim:

I'm confused ... why are you suggesting he manually create a resource
calendar when one is automatically created for each entry into the resource
list?
