Indirect? reference to external spreadsheet

I have cells with formulas that reference cells in an
external spreadsheet. The references are hard coded.

Instead, I would like to put the name of the external
spreadsheet in a cell, and then have all the formulas pick
up the name of the desired external spreadsheet from that
cell.

How do I do this?

Harlan Grove has posted a userdefined function that will do this:

It actually opens another instance of excel, opens the file, retrieves the value
and returns it for you.
