I highlighted several columns and formatted them with borders. That formatting goes on for an infinite number of pages. My spreadsheet only takes up about 4 pages. How can I eliminate the formatting that goes on indefinitely and causes 100+ pages to print?

Click on the diamond in the upper left at the intersection of the row and
column headers. Then select Format-Cells and clear the border and any other
formatting. Then select the range where you want the borders and format that
area only. By selecting an entire column, you format every cell in that
column and it makes Excel "think" there is a lot to print as you discovered.
Another option is to set the print area to only include the range you want
to print.
