Info: Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810) failure when Task Scheduler Not Running

P

Phil Wilson

This update will fail if the Windows Task Scheduler service is not running.
Analysis of the failed MSI log indicates it's calling a custom action called
CreateSchedule which is apparently dependent on the Task Scheduler service.
If you're like me and routinely mark this service "manual" you'll see this
error.

So what exactly is the question here? WGA is a very important security patch to
protect Microsoft's revenues and to stop you from being tempted to being a
pirate. It is highly recommended by Microsoft for users of Microsoft products
to install it so that Ms can keep a check on them.

Or not.

Don't want it, don't install it. AFAIK, it is not a required update.

No question from me here. I'm just pointing out (that's why it says Info in
the subject) that after thrashing around with this problem on a few
computers and looking at the raw MSI log I discovered the issue. The
responses I've had so far aren't exactly what I'd expected for trying to be
a good Samaritan and pointing out why others may have the same problem.
Kevin, I am ENABLING people to install this if the reason it fails on them
is what happened to me.

I have not verified this, but someone running Windows Live OneCare tells me
that this doesn't work. I suppose it's possible that the background check
that OneCare performs ignores settings from the UI mode in IE.

** Thanks for posting this info, Phil. ** The other posters could have
done that before starting a debate over whether this non-required update
should be installed or just ignored. Sometimes emotion get in the way of
good manners.
The confusion stems from the varying WGA/OGA updates ... the Validation
Tools determine if the software is Genuine, the others, which are *not*
required, are *Notification* tools that report to the User if they're
running pirated or Genuine sofware.
