Initial view of Word Document

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a Word Document that I work on annually for the auditors, and it always opens at the beginning of the document. Being as how this puppy is about 40 pages long, this is most inconvenient since I have to find the place where I was last reading/editing.

Before saving, I make sure to click so thed cursor is moved and save the document - I would like some way for the initial view to be in the same place as the last save.

Thed document is in Word 97 -2004 format and I have it opened in Word 2008 - is this the problem? Is there a way to set this up so opening the document will put me back where I was?

AFAIK, Word 2008 doesn't have that capability automatically. However,
what I habitually do on big docs (started a very long time ago) is when
I complete an editing session, I just insert a bookmark called "here".
Then when reopening the doc I just "goto" that bookmark "here" (Menu:
Edit/Go to or the CMD-G key stroke).

When we get macros back, I supposed you could do same in a simple macro
that is called when the doc is openend. But the above manual process
hardly costs any time.

Well, yes & no :)

The No:
Word doesn't work that way -- It always opens to the beginning of the
document regardless of where the last edit or cursor position may have been.

The Yes:
Word does have a GoBack command/keystroke (Command+Option+Z, I believe) to
return to the last edit [not cursor position] which could be used even after
the document had been reopened. However, it is broken in Word 2008 & will
only work during the current session with the file.

One possible workaround is to set a Bookmark at the spot before closing the
file. You can then use the Go To or Bookmark dialog to return to that point
when you reopen the file. Unfortunately, you can't move/update/overwrite a
Bookmark so you would have to delete & reset as needed.

Another option: Insert a Comment at the target location & on reopening use
the Browse By feature to return to it. Browse By can also be used to
navigate based on Tables, Footnotes & other landmarks.

If the document has been formatted using Styles perhaps the Document Map &
Thumbnails of the Navigation Pane would be sufficient to get you into the
right neighborhood.

And, of course, there's always Find if you know any of the specific content
you're looking for... as well as other possibilities that don't immediately
come to mind.

Re you saying that one must "delete & reset" a bookmark, not my
experience. For me, I've never found need (Word 2008 included) to
delete the "old" bookmark. I just insert the same name at a different
location (using "here" all the time) and Word takes care of the details.
Just works.

Thanks for the tips ... I guess I just never noticed it before.

Most of my other apps on open present me with the same view I had on last save.

I could be mis-remembering or perhaps it was in a prior version - It seemed
that in the past attempting to set a bookmark at a new location using the
name of an existing bookmark met with an objection. Am not near any Macs
today so I couldn't test it & haven't had occasion to try recently. Thanks
for the update.
