Ink Annotation and Versioning

Word 2003 crashes after I take the following steps:

1) Create a new Word document.
2) Use ink annotation to add a signature to the document.
3) Save a version of the document.
4) Add a second ink annotation to the document.
5) Save a new version of the document.
6) Try to load the original version.

I have verified the versioning works as expected with standard text
documents and with adding/removing bitmaps. Does the versioning tool in
Word 2003 not support ink annotation?
