Ink Containers

Hi
I've been using OneNote a little now and so far have come up against
the issues around printing, I'm turning a blind eye to those for now,
but now I have come across another.

If I use the product as I would say in a Lecture, taking note quickly,
drawing diagrams, maybe pasting in a clip and annotating then I end up
with lots of different containers all over my page.

Is there any way I can get everything in one container? Or group them
together?

Thanks in advance,

Damo

Not really. NOt without totally screwing up the look of what you already
have there. Any attempt to get it all into one container will cause
things to break up into lots of different parts move all over the place
almost at random. Just leave it alone if you don't want to spend an hour
trying to fix it later. This is another reason why I don't like that it
automatically saves EVERYTHING. If you hose up, yeah that gets
automatically saved too. Sometimes undo can't save you.

Why do you mind the different containers?

Because say if I draw a graph, with a few axis and lines and
annotations and then want to move it I want it to move as one piece,
not have to drag each individual line.

Also if I go back to that graph and add another line say it will put
that in a new container?

Try the lasso tool. Use it draw around everything you want to move and
then move that section.

Who knows? Depends really where you start drawing (whether you start
drawing inside or outside a container I believe).

How ON allocates note containers is a bit of mystery. ON tries to do its
best in guessing what you'd like to draw, and uses that for the note
container allocation. I am sure if someone from the MS team stops by,
they can give us the full explanation as to when it does what :)

Only too true.

the note container allocation. I am sure if someone from the MS

And perhaps he/she might understand that there really would be an
urgent need to tie togther ("group") what has been collected together
with the lasso ...

As Patrick said, you can use the Lasso tool. I have also found that if
you convert everything selected by the lasso to drawing by choosing
{Tools / Treat selected ink as / Drawing} (if I haven't rearranged the
menu items without remembering) then things are less likely to get messed
up when you move them. It seems to mess stuff up more if there is mixed
drawing and handwriting. You can go back later and select any words that
you might want to search for later and turn them back into handwriting. I
only do this for words that I know I will want to search for. This
reduces false hits when searching.

I use the note flags to group ink contains together (in OneNote 2003)

1. Use right mouse as a lasso, then convert everything to ink {Tools / Treat
selected ink as / Drawing} as Grant suggested.
2. Apply a note flag to the selection. Now the things tend to stay together.

ON seems to group ink by a note flag. (This is just a workaround and should
not keep the MS programmers from making a nice group-function.)
