Input from Bar code scanner and output to PLC

Hello,
I am starting to put together a database that will accept input from a bar
code scanner (mounted next to a conveyor belt). Based on the part number
scanned it would then send a Programmable Logic Controller some data (? of
some sort) to tell it what to do next.

Is this something that is easy / hard to do ? I have many years of
experience of writing simple subs and functions within Access but have never
had to make it interact with anything other than a DDE application, so any
pointers before I start would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue but haven't had much success - we had to program
everything into the PLC due to time constraints, but it would be great to at
least get output from Access to our PLC.
