Insert a cross reference?

I'm running word 2004 v11.2. How do I insert cross references in
documents? There is no "cross reference" item in the insert menu
which, according to standard help, is where it is supposed to be.

Hi Andrew -

That is where it should be, but Word seems to have a habit of 'losing' Menu
stuff every now & then. Click the Right-pointing triangle at the right end
of any toolbar & select 'Customize Toolbars/Menus'. In the dialog that opens
go to the Toolbars page, click the *name* of the Menu Bar, then click Reset,
OK.

(BTW- You can also get to the Customize dialog by way of Tools>Customize, or
by Ctrl+Clicking a separator between groups of buttons on any toolbar.)

If that doesn't fix it (or if it happens repeatedly) you may have a damaged
preferences file, so take a look here, if need be:

Thanks very much for the response. Resetting the menu bar did not
change the insert menu, so I'm off to look at preferences files...
