One reason you're not seeing the command may be that you are still using
"adaptive menus," which are enabled by default in Word 2000 and above. To
see if this is the problem, look at the bottom of the Insert menu to see if
you see a chevron (double down arrow). If so, click on that to expand the
menu. You should then see Symbol.
If this is the issue, and you'd rather always see full menus, open Tools |
Customize and choose the Options tab.
1. In Word 2000, clear the check boxes for "Menus show recently used items
first" and "Standard and Formatting toolbars share one row."
2. In Word 2002, check the boxes for "Always show full menus" and "Show
Standard and Formatting toolbars on two rows."
If that is not the issue, then open Tools | Customize and choose the
Commands tab. Find Symbol in the Insert category and drag it to the Insert
menu.
