Insert a text file into a template, font changes

I have set up a template that has the Normal font changed, as well as
the Plain Text font changed.

I insert a flat ASCII file into a document that was opened using the
template. First I'm asked about the encoding and then when I select
any of the obvious options, the file is inserted, but the style is now
Plain Text and the size has changed from 7 to 10.

This process worked fine with Word 97 and now with Word 2002, its a
problem.

Suggestions?
