Insert Auto Text Menu

I am using word 2003 with all service packs applied. When
opening the headers and footers view to apply page
numbering the toolbar reflects a "greyed out" "Insert
Auto Text" button. This would appear to be caused by the
fact that the menu items e.g. "Page X of Y" are not
present?
Please can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

This *could* be caused by having the header/footer in a style other than
Header, Footer, or Normal, but that's not likely. More likely is that you've
managed to overwrite Normal.dot, thereby deleting the built-in AutoText
entries. To ascertain whether or not this is the problem, close the
header/footer pane and go to Insert | AutoText | AutoText and see whether
the entries are listed (or you can look at Insert | AutoText | Header and
Footer to see whether you get a menu). If they're not, then they are no
longer in Normal.dot, and you will probably need to generate a new
Normal.dot to retrieve them. See

My guess is that for some reason your header or footer is not in the header
or footer style.

Hi Suzanne,
Many Thanks for the help. I read the article you refer to
and this is indeed my problem.
As to how it happened - I attempted to modify the
Normal.dot template and as I received a meassage advising
that I could not not save a document with the same name
as a document that is already open I saved it under a
different name and then renamed the original Normal as
Mormalbak amd the newly saved file as Normal. The problem
is that in the process I lost the menu as per my original
question.
My problem now is - How do I modify and save Normal
correctly?
Thanks for the help
Bill

Start by renaming Normal.dot and letting Word create a new one. You can then
use the Organizer (Tools | Templates and Add-ins) to retrieve macros, custom
styles, AutoText, etc.) from your old Normal.dot. Keep in mind that "Only
God can make a tree," and only Word can create a Normal.dot. Don't ever try
to create one yourself.
