insert Autoshape connector - why's it grayed out?

I'm trying to insert an autoshape connector in a Word doc. While I can see
the selection of connectors, they're grayed out. How do I change this so I
can use them?

If this is Word 2003 (and maybe 2002), connectors are available only in a
drawing canvas (Insert | Picture | New Drawing).
