Insert Checkbox in Word 2007

I have tried using the checkbox in the Legacy Controls found via the
Developer tab, but all I get is a gray shaded box that I can't do anything
with. I would like a checkbox that an X or checkmark can be placed in by
clicking on the box. Does that exsist?

Before the check box can actually be clicked, you will have to enable forms
protection. First of all, display the Developer tab (if necessary): Click the
Office button, and click Word Options. In the Popular category, make sure
"Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" is selected, and click OK. Then, on the
Developer tab, click Protect Document. In the Restrict Formatting and Editing
pane, click to select "Allow only this type of editing in the document," and
then choose "Filling in forms" in the list box. Finally, click the Yes, Start
Enforcing Protection button (type a password if you want to).

Any of the legacy controls work only when you "protect the document
for forms" in the Protect Document > Restrict Formatting and Editing
pane.

However, this has the additional effect that you can't edit the text.
You can insert section breaks before and after the checkbox and then
protect only that one section, but a number of Word's features still
won't work in the unprotected sections.

I did the step by step instructions but the "Yes, Start Enforcing Protection"
button was still grayed out.

Before clicking the Protect Document button on the ribbon, look in the
Controls section of the same ribbon. If the Design Mode button is
highlighted, click it to turn it off. Then try the Protect Document
button again.
