You need to change the selection tool to the one for selecting objects.
In Word 2007, that is done by clicking on the Select pulldown in the Editing
section of the Home tab of the Ribbon. In earlier versions of Word, it is
done by clicking on the Select Objects arrow, second from the left on the
Drawing toolbar (View>toolbars)
