Insert Cross-reference (only number - not label)

Hello,
I use word 2003 and I want to insert a cross-reference in the text, for
example for a Figure.

The Caption is
"Figure 1. Displacement of"

But I want to insert only the number (not the label) in the text.
(I don't want the word "Figure" to appear in the reference of this figure).

Is there any way to do it? The only choice I have is "Only label and number"

If I manualy delete the label from the reference in the text, when I update
it, it will appear
again.

Thank you in advance.

The only solution that I found, after a lot of search, is that I can use
"preserve formatting" to the field

then format the fonts of the word "Figure" to "Hidden"

so that finally only the number and not the label appears.

There is a field option to suppress all non-delimiter characters, but it
does not work with figure captions.
