Welcome, Jay! Keep coming back!
I totally agree with Daiya.
Once you have solved your specific problem, if you would like some tips on
initial settings to choose in Word, take a look at some notes on the way I
use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available
as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html). You'll find this
covered from page 33.
[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Hi Jay,
welcome to the Mac!
I don't totally understand your question--inserting cursor should just
be a case of clicking the mouse. Can you say more to help us understand
what is happening for you? Are you using a laptop with a trackpad? Did
you create the document or might someone have sent you a protected
document? Also, it's always best to say what version of Word and OS X
you are using.
Re spell-checking--I suspect that you want to be able to right-click on
a word with a red scribble under it and select the correct word? On the
Mac, you can hold down control (ctrl) while clicking, and that will be
the same as a right-click and will give you the contextual menu.
However, I really suggest that new switchers just buy a different mouse
with two buttons or more--I don't like Apple's mice, although they have
maybe improved somewhat in the last few years, and your life will be
easier using a mouse you are happy with. Lots of mice work fine on a
Mac--some good companies for mice are Microsoft and Logitech.
Hope that helps somewhat--
Daiya
