Hi Jay,

welcome to the Mac!

I don't totally understand your question--inserting cursor should just
be a case of clicking the mouse. Can you say more to help us understand
what is happening for you? Are you using a laptop with a trackpad? Did
you create the document or might someone have sent you a protected
document? Also, it's always best to say what version of Word and OS X
you are using.

Re spell-checking--I suspect that you want to be able to right-click on
a word with a red scribble under it and select the correct word? On the
Mac, you can hold down control (ctrl) while clicking, and that will be
the same as a right-click and will give you the contextual menu.

However, I really suggest that new switchers just buy a different mouse
with two buttons or more--I don't like Apple's mice, although they have
maybe improved somewhat in the last few years, and your life will be
easier using a mouse you are happy with. Lots of mice work fine on a
Mac--some good companies for mice are Microsoft and Logitech.

Hope that helps somewhat--

Welcome, Jay! Keep coming back!

I totally agree with Daiya.

Once you have solved your specific problem, if you would like some tips on
initial settings to choose in Word, take a look at some notes on the way I
use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available
as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html). You'll find this
covered from page 33.

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Hi Jay,

The only other thing I could think of is that the mouse wigged out a
bit--sometimes mine refuses to move and I have to clean out some dust.
But also, mouse movement on the Mac is calibrated differently than in
Windows by default, I think--try going into Apple Menu | System
Preferences | Hardware | Keyboard and Mouse | Mouse and messing with the
tracking speed. It might be that the mouse is not responding as you are
accustomed to. Alternatively, if you are using Apple's Mighty Mouse,
clicking might be a little weird on it.

Sounds like you got the initial work done--if the mouse continues to be
a problem, try to keep track of what's going on on your computer when
the problem occurs.

Post more questions anytime--best to start a new thread with a new post
for different topics.

hope that helps,
Daiya
