Insert Date - prevent automatic updates

G

Gnibtay

Hello, I'm using Word 2003. I'd like to be able to insert today's date with a
simple key stroke, and then have it NOT update automatically the next time I
open the document.

I have "Automatic Update" UNCHECKED in the \Insert\Date & Time menu, but it
updates automatically anyway. Maddening. I like my documents on disk to
save the date as part of the record of when something went out. this little
bug makes the Insert Date shortcut Useless. Is there a work-around?

thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have.

View the field code (select the date, and Shift-F9) and change DATE to
CREATEDATE .

I can't say why you're getting the wrong field from the menu.

I see, you're right my field code is DATE. We've got it mapped to a keyboard
shortcut {Alt-Shift-D} which links to DATE, not CREATEDATE. I'll see whether
I can map it to the CREATEDATE field & hopefully that will solve my problem.

And to be clear, it seems that CREATEDATE links to the date LAST SAVED.

On the other hand, using the menu instead of my shortcut seems simply to
insert the date itself & not a field. So maybe I would link my shortcut to
that menu item. Any suggestions on how I would do that?

thanks.

I take it back, I see that CREATEDATE is actually the date created rather
than the date last saved...thx.

Whoever set up the first one can probably change it to the one you
want!

I think there might even be a field for that, too.

Not from me!

Alt+Shift+D is a built-in shortcut that comes with Word. To change it, you
would have to save CREATEDATE as an AutoText entry and assign the shortcut
to that entry.

CreateDate links to the date the document was FIRST saved (or the last time
it was re-saved using SAVEAS). Clicking SAVE does not change the CREATEDATE
result.
