Insert>Field>Ask doesn't work when opening template?

Hi All,

I created a letter template for my firm. I have the field>asks for the
recipient and address, as well as the subject.

If I double click on the .dot file, it prompts me for what it's supposed to.
But if I do the normal File>New>On My Computer> and choose it from it's
location which is the default next to normal.dot, it doesn't prompt for
anything.

This is of course how I would want it to work for my users to use these
templates normally. Is this normal?

What do I do to get these prompts to work when it's opened as a new file?
