Insert File as Link

L

Linda

My understanding is when you insert a file as a link "the
styles in the inserted document are copied into your main
document, but the formatting and the running heads are set
by the main document. You can also link the inserted
content to the source document so that any changes made to
it will appear in the main document."
When I do this:
1) the formatting and running heads are not set by the
main document and
2) the changes made to the source document do not appear
in the main document.
The Edit>Links is set on manual. How can I change this to
automatic?
When I "select and copy content and paste special" from a
source document to the main document and then make changes
to the source document those change will appear in the
main document. This is set at Edit>Links automatic.
I'm working in a document where I want to insert an entire
file, not just part of a file.
Why does it work in Paste Special and not Insert as Link?
Thanks so much.

Hi Linda,

Which version of Word, including any SPs? (If you don't know,
please check in Help/About)

Are you using STYLES to set this formatting, or just applying
the formatting directly?
2) the changes made to the source document do not appear
in the main document.

Please make two such links in your document. Now press Alt+F9
to see the field codes that maintain the links. Copy what you
find between the { field brackets } and paste it into your
reply, please.

Hi Cindy,
1) Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)
2) I'm will be using Styles to format. I have not been
using Styles in my test.
3) I realized yesterday that F9 will update the changes.
Is there a way to make this automatic? It happens
automatically with Insert Objects.
4) When inserting INSERT A FILE:
{ INCLUDETEXT "C:\\Documents and Settings\\linda\\My
Documents\\Test Folder\\9.Sales Meeting Structure.Weekly
and Monthly.doc" } - (I had to type this in because when I
copied it into this document the printed text was
transferred.)
5) When LINKING AN OBJECCT:
{ Link Word Document.8 "C:\\Documents and
Settings\\linda\\My Documents\\Test Folder\\5. Value
Propostions.doc" "" \a \p }

Thanks for your help.

Hi Linda,
2) I'm will be using Styles to format. I have not been
using Styles in my test.
So, the first part of your question - importing the
formatting - is solved?
3) I realized yesterday that F9 will update the changes.

OK, a LINK field has the option to update automatically.
That's the \a switch you see in the field code you pasted.

INCLUDETEXT fields do not have this option, but in my
experience they usually do update reliably, even without
F9. However...

In recent service packs (SP) Microsoft has been including a
basic change to link updating due to "security
precautions". While this might be interfering you your
case, I'd expect it to also interfere with the LINK field,
not just IncludeText fields. But you may want to see this
Knowledge Base article, anyway. See if adding the Registry
Key helps with the updates, at all:
